This may sound silly but growing up I didn’t think reindeers were real. The moment my Santa Claus dreams were shattered at 7 years old because Verniece found Santa’s supposed gifts for us on a cupboard, I just assumed that all the little details that came along were all just fictional. That is till we found out about a great place in the northern part of Finland called Lapland. When we were researching for things to do on KKDAY, we found a Northern Lights x Reindeer Safari Experience and we honestly thought that it was just part of the whole North Pole skit that Lapland plays so well. I’m sure I’m not alone in this but the kid in all of us can never get over this heartbreak! :( lol Right?? We flew to Finland last March where it was already 3 months after Christmas but once you enter Lapland, the place makes you feel like it’s December all over again and it’s just about to come! It is located in the Arctic Circle, where the famous North Pole is and it’s amazing how they’ve used this to make it feel like it’s all year round there! :) Even just for a few days, the places makes you a giddy kid all over again, where all your Santa dreams are complete and is eager to meet him in his very home! Can you sense my bitterness towards this? If I have kids one day, I will make sure to prolong theirs as much as possible! haha!
We chose to do the Reindeer Safari at night because Finland, they say, is the best place to see the Northern Lights. The activity was strong in the forecast so I was praying that we would see Aurora while riding on a sleigh. We geared up for the negative 4 degree weather and headed to do the Reindeer Farm where we saw up close that Rudolph really did exist in real life! :) I swear, Lapland this magical place that pieces all your Christmas dreams together! We started by meeting the reindeer we were partnered with, got a few notes on how to safely drive her and off we went! It was that quick! You control a reindeer just like a horse with a rope, where you pull when you want them to stop and whip them if you want them to go faster. :) We were lead by our guide and we made them run till we reached a frozen lake. She then checked the Northern Lights forecast and it looked good! She told us that it was to appear soon and we should start setting up our cameras. 5 minutes passed and nada. 10 minutes passed and still no Aurora. You see even with the right gear and about 2425802 layers, when your skin’s used to the Philippines’ tropical weather, standing, doing nothing at – 4 degrees can be a nightmare. So after the 15 minute mark passed, our group decided to just take photos with the reindeer so we can leave right after. When we checked the photo, we saw this faint green light on top of our heads. She appeared!! We all couldn’t believe it! Verniece and I got so excited and started shrieking! I guess everyone started to notice too and they all screamed as well. haha! We forgot about our freezing butts and just took as much photos as our cameras permitted us to :)
The scene back to the Reindeer Farm was perfect for a Christmas movie. Imagine navigating through a frozen forest, while sitting on a sleigh being pulled by a reindeer. The icing to this Christmas cupcake was Aurora Borealis dancing and showing off in the sky. The universe is funny this way, it breaks your heart then finds the perfect moment to make it whole again.
