“How do you afford to travel all the time?” “What’s your job?, What do you really do?” “How do you afford your lifestyle?”
These are the questions we get asked a lot online especially after the recent trip we took to Europe with YOSI SAMRA. Going to Europe for 15 days straight and visiting 5 countries can make people wonder how we get to do that without actually knowing what we really do. However, after the amount of times we got those questions, it surprises us that there are still people in the dark about how bloggers or online influencers earn money. For those who don’t know yet, here’s a blogpost to answer the questions you ask yourself whenever you scroll through your Instagram timeline or visit your favorite blogger’s website! :) I guess I can say that this is one of the reasons why alot of brands tap us to endorse their products. Most of us (I say most because some people still don’t know how to do this) have mastered the art of advertising brands without hard selling it. It’s not easy I tell you especially if you’ve been thinking about captions, blog or vlog topics and content for years! You just run out of unique and interesting ideas after awhile. Online influencers work because you get convinced to buy something just by looking at a photo, reading a blogpost or watching a video without saying the brand name 5385938593 times the way radio or tv ads work :) With that said, let me answer the first question:
What’s your job?
This used to be a tricky question for me because to tell you honestly, even I didn’t know what my official job title was. I hate the word influencer even if that’s mostly what people call my job. Blogger still sounds a bit shallow especially for people who do not belong to the online world but with all the decks made by advertising agencies about us that I’ve read, blogger, online influencer and book author are usually 3 things that go after Verniece and I’s names. So I guess you can use any of those three to call our job. This may sound like a joke to you but these do exist. We are responsible tax payers, we issue ORs approved by the BIR, we have a paycheck that we look forward to getting and even some of the most famous bloggers in the world’s net worth are more than the jobs most people are familiar with. So before you look down at people who do this for a living, let me borrow the words of Miranda Priestly for you Andy Sachs of the world:
“This…Stuff”? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select , I don’t know that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you are trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, its not turquoise. It’s not lapis. Its actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then i think it was Yves Saint Laurent – wasn’t it who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and its sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact you’re wearing a sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.
What do you REALLY do??
We don’t only take photos while smiling and eating or take videos talking about our monthly favorites or document our trips around the world but what we do is actually really hard. Most of us don’t have a team to help us with work so we are a one (in our case, two) man team! I’ve said this before but we are our own photographer + videographer + make up artist + hair stylist + editor + beauty, fashion and lifestyle writers + art director + production house + attend events + meetings and we do that sometimes all in a days work. That’s what we really do. If you want to read about the blog post I wrote on this before, here it is: THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT BLOGGERS REALLY DO. :)
How do you afford to travel all the time?
most of us do not finance all of our trips. It’s just impossible to unless you’ve got a ton of extra dough to spend. We actually afford to travel all the time because we are sponsored by brands to go on them. Most of the time, the brand we are endorsing during that trip has nothing to do with the place we are going or the reason we are there. Again, it’s just a ploy for readers to be familiar with a brand or know about it. Plus it doesn’t hurt that shooting beautiful photos abroad gives us an easier time to promote these brands. So next time you wonder how that blogger or influencer got to afford that trip, look for the accounts they tag on social media, they’re usually the ones who paid for it.
Disclaimer: there are still some of us who do take trips that are not sponsored. You can tell if they do not tag or mention one brand again and again.
How do you afford your lifestyle?
We do not do everything for free. In fact, I think bloggers or influencers should RARELY do anything for free. Speaking from a blogger’s point of view, it still takes a lot of money, effort and time to take new content that we deserve to be paid for our day’s hard work. We can do what we can do because most of us get paid for every sponsored post we do – may it be for Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube or our own blogs. We do have different rates though so it really depends with the number of followers or the quality of work the person puts out. That’s how we get to afford it! :)
