Never in my life did I ever think that I will be sitting right here in the first class suite of Ermirates A380, enjoying a glass of Dom Perignon and the finest Godiva chocolates. It sounds so obnoxious, I know, but I’m almost halfway through the flight and I’m pinching myself cause I still can’t believe it!! If you’re not familiar with what I’m talking about, here’s a little reminder: Remember the movie Sex and the City 2 when Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha flew to Dubai? Recall the airplane they took. Yup, I’m in THAT plane! Okay, if you’re not a SATC fan, then have you seen the Emirates ad with Jennifer Aniston on it? Where she had a nightmare that her plane didn’t have a shower, a bar and a suite? Okay, if you’ve seen that. Well, I’m in that plane with a shower, a bar and suite. Okay, now do you get why I’m freaking out?!?!?!?!?!
Note that I’m not exaggerating anything here because this is not a sponsored post. This travel of mine is a personal one and it’s actually the late anniversary gift/ early 23rd birthday gift of Ben to me and this is something I know I’m going to remember forever :) Anyway, let me tell you about my experience!
We took the flight from Manila to Dubai on business class and I’ve ridden on a couple of long haul business class flights before but this by far is the best for me. When I sat on my seat, I was wondering, if this looked like this, how will first class look like?! Well, ladies and gentlemen, this is how it looked like:
Apparently, when you fly first class, you immediately become someone who can’t wait, who can’t pick up anything and you don’t need to say thank you :P haha! When we landed in Dubai, we went straight to the Emirates First Class Lounge that looked like a lobby of a 5 star hotel. Everyone’s extra friendly of course and I was so pleased to see so much Filipino workers in the lounge :) Felt right at home!
Ben and I totally forgot that we had our own way to board the plane. They made a little entrance for us so no economy class passenger will see us. I guess first class was made for celebrities, businessmen and politicians who want little privacy. Okay, so back to us forgetting, I met Ben in the gate since he stayed behind in the lounge while I did alittle make up shopping around the terminal. When we got to the gate, we had to wait awhile since the line was pretty long. They were even letting a few Arabs ahead of us even when we were in line, which was totally okay. No harm but when it was our turn to get our passports checked and the guy saw that we were first class, he freaked out and apologised a million times for making us wait and for not giving us special attention. That’s what I meant when first said that first class passengers can’t wait. Well, I guess if you’re paying thousands of dollars for a ticket, you can’t afford to be hassled :) Just found that tidbit both funny and memorable!
After passing those gates, we had our own little elevator too that needed a staff pass to be accessed then off we were to the plane! Just like how I imagined it in my head, it was airplane heaven. A very pretty lady escorted me to my seat and she said, “Welcome, Ms Enciso, this is your suite.” That officially started my 13 hours inside the Emirates A380 first class suite.
Everything was plastered with gold, marble and leather. Right when Ben and I sat down, we were offered a glass of Dom each followed by their trademark combination, Arabic coffee and dates. Ahhh, just like in the movies. <3
Just as we settled in, we were handed a bag of goodies – don’t you love airplane goodies? We got pajamas, cotton slippers and a vanity kit each by Bvlgari.
We were handed menus right after and it was explained to us that in first class, you can order anything from the menu, anytime, as much as you want. It had everything you can imagine – beef, halibut, seafood, vegetables, a great selection of cheese and bread and the best wine and alcohol available on the market.
Next up, Ben and I checked the showers. We were so intrigued!! We can have the suite experience on other airlines but we knew that we can’t get this experience anywhere else :) True enough, it was as big as my restroom + shoe closet. It had it’s own shower, a hairdryer, as much toiletries as you need, heated floors and it’s very own shower attendant. Yup, Emirates A380 has two members of the crew just for these :) You have 30 minutes of shower time and 5 minutes of water use. We tried this about 3 hours into the flight and I was doing a happy dance inside the shower because I was literally thousands of miles above air, taking a bath :P haha!
While Ben napped, I decided to order everything I fancied on the menu – caviar, duo fish (halibut & salmon), a cheese platter, champagne and dessert wine with some chocolates to finish it off.
After about an hour, Ben finally woke up and he asked if I wanted to check out the bar of the business class since it’s bigger and just looked cooler in pictures. First class’ is very small but still so classy! It was fully stocked with only the best in the plane :)
Ben and I walked towards the end of the plane and then we saw this:
Everyone’s extra friendly and it was nice to talk to the crew who came from different pats of the world. Emirates is very proud of this as they announced before we took off that the crew came from 17 different countries and speaks 13 languages. There were a few Filipinos on board too! :)
After a few sips on our glasses, we realised that the reason why the bar was empty was because everyone was trying to go on NYC time already and they were correcting their body clocks. So we decided to go back to our suites and take a little nap. Before I got some shut eye, I requested for some chamomile tea and it came with butter biscuits that reminds me so much of the ones I tried in Scotland :)
Woke up about 2 hours later and I knew I had to get something to eat once again. I browsed through the entertainment the airline had provided for us called ICE and chose to watch the first season all over again!
Just chilled in jammies the rest of the flight and took another short shower just before landing at JFK, New York :)
My experience was something I will never forget and I wish I can replay it all over again and actually try everything on the menu this time. I think I only got to try half of it! Now I know why Jennifer Anniston thought that 13 hours on a plane was not enough….
Ben and I’s honest to goodness final thoughts: HOW WILL WE EVER SURVIVE ECONOMY CLASS AGAIN AFTER THAT?!
